NEW YORK (Billboard) – British newcomer Taio Cruz has broken a seven-year-old record by soaring to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart in the United States.

Cruz's "Break Your Heart," featuring rapper Ludacris, soared 52 places to the top, a new record for the largest jump to the top by an act with its first charting single.

The old record was held by inaugural "American Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson's victory song, "A Moment Like This," which flew 51 places to the top in September 2002. Clarkson retains the mark for biggest jump to No. 1 among all tracks with "My Life Would Suck Without You," which nearly leapt the entire chart length (from No. 97) just over a year ago.

"Break Your Heart" shifted 273,000 downloads in its first full week of availability, according to Nielsen SoundScan, to also claim the No. 1 slot on Digital Songs. It debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. last September.

The Hot 100 will be updated in its entirety on Thursday.
