LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – First, there was Robert Evans the producer/studio executive. Then Evans the autobiographer. Then audiobook star. Then documentary subject. And now, Evans the Broadway play.

Smuggler Films said Wednesday that it has acquired the live stage rights to Evans' 1994 autobiography, "The Kid Stays in the Picture," and its unpublished sequel, "The Fat Lady Sang."

Jon Robin Baitz -- whose first play, "Mizjon robin baitzlansky/Zilinksy," concerned a couple of down-on-their-luck Hollywood producers -- will adapt the two books. Richard Eyre, who most recently directed "Carmen" for the Metropolitan Opera, has been chosen to direct the production, slated for the 2010-2011 Broadway season.

John H. Hart, one of the producers of the Tony-winning Broadway revival of "Chicago," formed Smuggler Films last year with partners Brian Carmody and Patrick Milling Smith as a new division of their advertising and music video production company.

Among its projects, Smuggler is developing a stage version of the movie musical "Once" in association with Frederick Zollo and Barbara Broccoli.
